Loders Back-Along

Information about Loders Back-Along

Bernard Paull grew up in Uploders. He attended Loders School from the age of five, moving to Bridport Grammar School aged eleven. A year later, in 1956, the three secondary schools in Bridport combined to become the Alfred Colfox School, one of the first comprehensives in Dorset.

Following his success in Maths, Physics and Chemistry at ‘A’ level he was accepted for a position of Trainee Engineer in the County Surveyor’s Department of Dorset County Council (DCC). This involved three years study at Plymouth College of Technology (now Plymouth University) leading to a University of London External Degree in Civil Engineering; BSc.(Eng.).

Following several years of experience in highway and bridge design and site supervision he qualified as a Chartered Engineer with both the Institution of Municipal Engineers and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). He worked for DCC for 35 years reaching the level of Chief Engineer in the Consultancy arm of the Transportation and Engineering Department. He was a committee member with the Devon, Somerset and Dorset branch of the ICE and Secretary for a number of years.

He is a keen stamp and postcard collector and member of the Bridport and District Stamp and Postcard Club, Polonus (the Polish Philatelic Society in the US) and the Polish Philatelic Society in GB. He has had articles published in the latter’s society magazine.

He is a trustee and treasurer for the Loders Village Hall Management Committee. He enjoys his garden and allotment which provide a plentiful supply of fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers to family and friends as well as good exercise for him!

On retirement he was invited to join the Rotary Club of Bridport where he met a group of like-minded people helping worthy causes and supporting the community. He was Club Secretary for about five years and President in 2017/18, the Club’s 70th Anniversary year.

He is married to Christine. They have two daughters, Julia an accountant and Helen an architect. Their two granddaughters Abigail and Francesca Lincoln both attended Loders School before moving on to the Sir John Colfox Academy
